Players leaving the Premier League

As I watched the summer activity in the transfer market yesterday, I saw that Leeds United could re-sign former players Jonathan Woodgate, Lee Bowyer and Alan Smith. In my opinion this would be a great blow as the 3 players still have a lot to offer at the highest level, provided they remain injury free. The news made me think of other players who descended to the lower leagues while in the final years of their playing careers:

Craig Bellamy-After being left out of Manchester City's Europa League team for the 2010-11 season, Bellamy joined his hometown of Cardiff City on a season loan. He proved to be an instant hit with a 35-yard free throw on his debut and scored 10 more goals on the season, helping Cardiff reach the championship play-offs. He has since returned to Man City, but has not ruled out a permanent move back to Cardiff.

Paul Ince - After leaving Middlesbrough in 2002, Ince left a division to join Wolvehampton Wanderers. In his first season, he helped them move up to the Premier League through the playoffs, but after one season they went down again. Ince went on to play 115 games for the Wolves scoring 10 goals. He has stated that he would love to return to the club as a coach.

Denis Irwin: The Irishman joined Wolves at the same time as his former Manchester United teammate Paul Ince and was part of the team that was promoted to the Premier League in 2003. After relegation from the team in 2004, Irwin retired to the age of 38 years.

Teddy Sheringham-When Premier League Portsmouth decided not to offer a contract to 38-year-old Sheringham, he decided that he would leave a division and play for West Ham. A fantastic year for Sheringham saw him become the division's third top scorer with 20 goals and he also won the Player of the Season Championship award, นักเตะพรีเมียร์ลีค.

Dennis Wise - After being fired from Leicester City, Wise moved to the Milwall First Division in 2002 and became a players coach in 2003. A successful season with the club culminated in their reaching the FA Cup final where they lost 3-0 against Manchester United. As United had already qualified for the UEFA Champions League, Milwall qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in their history and sadly was eliminated in the first round.

Paul Merson - Merson joined newly relegated first division club Middlesbrough in 1997 after doubling the salary terms offered by Arsenal. He was instrumental in the club's immediate return to the Premier League. After a stint with Aston Villa, Merson joined first division club Portsmouth in 2002 and was again a key player during their successful promotional season.

Darren Anderton - After an injury-plagued career with Portsmouth, Tottenham, Birmingham and Wolves, Anderton joined Bournemouth from League One in 2006 on a pay-per-play system. he excellent and scored his first hat-trick of his career during his time at the club

Nick Barmby-After his club, Leeds United, was relegated from the Premier League in 2004, Barmby joined his hometown club, Hull City. In his first season with the club, he helped them gain promotion to League One and in 2008 he was instrumental in securing Hull's promotion to the Premier League. Barmby still plays for the club to this day.
